At Home is a portrait series by photographer Chloe Paul, documenting BodyMindLife’s teachers in the spaces they have created to play and practice. We take a glimpse into their lives, investigate how they hold space for the community both virtually and within the physical structure of the studios, and ask them about the silly things they are missing under the current lockdown.

Join us as we tune in with Pilates teacher Juliet Leith.

Can you give us an introduction?

I am Juliet Leith and I teach Pilates at BodyMindLife.

Why were you originally drawn to Pilates?

My first taste of Pilates was through my dance conditioning training. My dance teacher had a reformer at her studio and it was love at first exercise.

How has your relationship with the practice changed?

My relationship with my Pilates practice has changed quite a lot. I’m doing more mat Pilates classes and participating in lots of online classes. I am really looking forward to going back to studio classes and seeing my favourite students and teachers.

Has your perception of home changed in the last few months?

My home has always been a sanctuary. One of the biggest adaptations during Iso has been having everyone home at the same time. Our zen space has become a very supportive workplace/dance/yoga/Pilates studio!

What do you love about what you do?

I love teaching people to move in connection to their breath and guide them through the beautiful benefits of Pilates.

What does your home practice mean to you?

It’s where I practice self-mastery.

How do you feel when you’re in flow?

I feel fabulous, at ease, connected to my heart and body. I love being in the flow as I can communicate clearly and allow the universe to work its magic!

Any insights about yourself in isolation?

One of the biggest insights I’ve had is feeling and acknowledging the everyday underlying anxiety that comes from my busy schedule and to-do list. Having space and time to really feel it in my body has been a truly enlightening process for me.

What are you listening to/reading?

Watching – Time: The Kalief Browder Story series on Netflix. It is a heartbreaking and heart-opening story. I highly recommend everyone add it to their must-watch list.
Reading – Becoming Supernatural by Joe Dispenza
